Daylight Savings Time Adjustment

Is it just me, or is the extended DST change this year a bunch of silliness?  It’s causing lost productivity getting tons of systems adjusted.

Why do we have DST?  Some say it’s to lower our consumption of power, but in some cases it actually increases.  Kids sometimes have to leave in the dark to get on school buses. Besides, sundials don’t have an adjustment! <grin>.  My biggest complaint is changing up my sleep schedule, but the overall loss of productivity is the work all IT folks are engaged in to make sure everything is patched.  This is being treated with the same resources it takes to address a virus threat: it requires patching, checking, reporting etc.  I’ve had 30+ non-IT people asking what they should do with their computers, and cell phones, and pocket PCs; so it even affects you!  It’s a pain; everyone’s pain.

  1. In 1973 DST saved 10,000 barrels of oil a day. I have to believe that today that number is at least 4 times higher. So it is a pain in the azz but might be worth it. I don’t care either way.
